Your Casey County Public Library (CCPL) bids a fond farewell to the Dewey Decimal System. For long-time library goers, the four-to-five digit (or sometimes longer!) number on the side of books may feel familiar. However, for the younger generations, it might feel a lot like gibberish. (Or worse—math!)
The CCPL is excited to announce that the nonfiction section is officially Dewey-free. Books are now organized in a way that closely resembles a book store, using English categories and subcategories rather than numbers classifications. So if you’re looking for your next favorite obsession, try checking under Entertainment > Hobbies. If you’re looking for something great to bring to the next family dinner, check under Cooking > Desserts.
The new system is much more accessible for patrons of all ages, including those who may be neurodivergent or have struggles with numbers. It also will make browsing for similar books much easier, and hopefully increase the ability to find books that are most relevant to your unique interests and needs.
Please bear with us as we get the signage completed. In the meantime, if you’re struggling to find something, you can still always ask a librarian for help!
This project was made possible thanks to funding from the American Library Association Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Libraries grant.
